This guitar was inspired by a piece of Spalted Maple John had acquired over 25 years ago. It was one of those rare pieces of wood that had to be made into just the right guitar and until John could decide just what that guitar would be, it sat. As it sat it aged, which for wood is a very good thing. After 25 years John decided it had sat long enough and it was time for this wood to be put to good use. We had just acquired some striking Macassar Ebony, which is an exotic striped Ebony, and John had just recently been experimenting with different wood bindings and colored perflings. One such combination was an exquisite piece of Curly Koa with a bold red and black perfling.
With all of these things circling in John's mind, inspiration struck, and John created this guitar for his Masterpiece Series. The Masterpiece series are guitars that are truly one of a kind, all built by John out of the most rare and exotic of woods. Along with the Aged Spalted Maple he added a 100 year old Master Grade Sitka Spruce top and used the Curly Koa binding with the red and back perfling to bind the guitar. He made use of the Macassar Ebony for the headstock face, fingerboard, pickguard, bridge and tailpiece. A Walnut veneer adorned the back of the headstock and the guitar featured a 3-piece rock maple neck. To finish off the masterpiece he added Schaller tuners with Snakewood tuner buttons and a Snakewood truss-rod cover.
