The Double Top Grand Cabaret

This guitar was made for Buscarino endorser Ken Hatfield. Ken already owns a Cabaret, so the purpose of this guitar was to build something that had a different voice from the other guitars that Ken owns..

Ken had done some research into how to get the sound he was looking for. It was decided that the best way to achieve this was to use a double top.

In essence the double top is what it sounds like. It is two wooden tops of super-thin thickness with a core of Nomex sandwiched in between. The Nomex core is a super lightweight material that is woven into a honeycomb pattern, which makes it very strong.

Normally when you use a single top you have to make it thick enough to hold up to the tension exerted when the guitar is strung up. Of course the thicker the top the more you inhibit movement, which affects the sound.

Because the Nomex adds strength and stability to the top but not much weight, you can get the double top thinner, thus increasing the movement of the top. What you end up with is fatter treble and much more volume acoustically.

Ken's guitar is made of premium Quartersawn East Indian Rosewood back and sides, Double Spruce top, Curly Macassar Ebony Headstock veneer, Snakewood binding, Brazilian Rosewood bridge with Snakewood inserts, custom Tuners and an Ebony fingerboard.

It features an oval sound hole and a custom Mother of Pearl and Snakewood inlayed sound hole rosette. Ken decided he wanted a raised fingerboard extension, which he feels grants him easier access to the upper frets.

For a pickup Ken chose the RMC Poly Drive I Midi pickup system. This pickup allows him the freedom to be able to take each string out individually and E.Q. it or put effects on it separately for recording purposes. It also allows for the greatest threshold before feedback, while greatly reducing string squeak. This pickup also eliminates extraneous noise from other instruments in the band.
